Private Structure: LUXX XL Bangkok

“LUXX XL may seem like just another hip and trendy boutique hotels sprouting around Bangkok. But what sets this hotel apart from the others is the cohesive concept manifested not only on the architecture and design layout, but also on the overall atmosphere it oozes.

“Style, Space & Privacy,” says Dusadee Srishevachart, the designer and owner of the hotel, when asked about the concept of his hotel. The 36-year-old Columbia University educated hotelier is a trained architect who managed to turn his family’s property into a well-conceptualised boutique hotel.

StarProperty visits the stunning hotel and chats with Srishevachart about renovation, reviving family business and why every married man wish to be single every once in a while.

How did you get into hotel business?
My family owns a few properties in Bangkok, which include shophouses and apartment buildings. We rent out spaces to tenants. These properties were built about two decades ago, and frankly speaking they looked rather rundown.

I took over the family’s business after completing my postgraduate programme in Columbia University, where I had studied Master in Real Estate Development, and I knew that the first thing that I needed to do was to reassess the direction of my family business. I was convinced that running these properties as hotels would be more profitable, but we didn’t have the capital and resources to compete with big hotels. I figured that boutique hotel is the answer.

What was the concept you had in mind when designing LUXX XL?
The concept of LUXX XL is to integrate style, design, and privacy. LUXX XL is, indeed, about extra space. The vision of the design is to deliver utmost privacy, which explains the limited number of rooms in this hotel despite the large piece of land. Despite located in the heart of Bangkok, I want my guests to enjoy tranquillity, which is reflected by the perfect mix of simple layout and minimal decoration of this hotel.

How does this concept translate to the design and the architecture of LUXX XL?
The selection of materials is one way to do it. As you can see in the lobby, there are four main elements used here: steel and glass articulate starkness of urban living, while woods and sandstones exude warmness. When put together, these element look very stylish.

The soft lighting throughout the establishment highlights privacy while the supersized windows and doors combined with minimal interior items, renders spacious feel. To enliven these elements, we play chill-out lounge music all day in the lobby.

Do you apply the same concept for the rooms?
Yes, I do. I utilise three different materials for the floor in each room; teakwood for the bedroom, Indian marble for the bathroom and slate stone for the terrace.

A huge glass sliding door leading to the terrace and steel partition etched on the wooden vanity accentuate a modern feel to the room. Adjustable soft lightings are used to give the rooms a soothing ambience.

How many rooms do you have in this hotel?
There are 51 rooms spread throughout 7 floors in this hotel. Following the original structure of the building, there are four types of rooms available here – studio (33 sq m), studio L (47 sq m), suite (66 sq m) and suite L (99 sq m). In this sense, my renovation work only went as far as interior works and space allocation, and not to the extent of rebuilding the rooms.

How would you personally describe LUXX XL hotel in terms of design and architecture?
I personally would describe it as modern, stylish and sexy, although the official slogan of the hotel is ‘Style, Space & Privacy’. I often get teased by friends that this hotel is the archetype of my lusting over single life, since it looks like a groovy bachelor pad more than anything else.

Well, how true is that allegation?
Who doesn’t want a huge personal space, right? But then again, I live in this hotel with my wife and two children.
