At Home With Sazzy Falak

The petite Sazzy enjoys collecting vintage items from places she has travelled to be used at home.

Malaysian actress and TV host Sazzy Falak is a fan of all things Bohemian and borrows the concept for her home.

Bohemian chic, previously known as a gypsy-esque lifestyle of budding French artists and entertainers, currently refers to the reuse of vintage items. In other words: giving new life to what was once old.

“I didn’t want the style in my home to be mundane. I love the idea of collecting interesting decorative items from places I have travelled (to). It’s more Bohemian and at the same time classy and elegant. That’s the way I like my home to be – a reflection of me,” she says.

Sazzy enjoys time alone with her favourite drink on her patio bench.

Lights, Camera, Action!

Sazzy has been in the local theatre scene since she was 11, and the talent has since appeared in many productions including television dramas such as Gol & Gincu, Apa Itu Cinta and Kerana Itu Cinta.

The 28-year-old has also hosted events such as Force of Nature Jogjakarta, Anugerah Era 2006 and the Malaysian Film Festival Red Carpet Awards 2006. Her latest stint was in the fantasy comedy flick Jin Notti, which premiered during Hari Raya.

Despite her hectic schedule, the multi-talented Sazzy also co-manages SinclairFalak Sdn Bhd, a production company she set up with noted Malaysian actor Ashraf Sinclair.

“We’re currently in the midst of introducing a new local band and a talk show host,” Sazzy reveals. “We’re also presently sourcing scripts for an upcoming project that Ashraf and I are about to start.”

A Balancing Act

“I cannot live without my bed! Where would I get my beauty sleep? I love my beauty sleep! And my food!” says Sazzy.

Apart from acting and managing her production house, the happily married lady is also passionate about her favourite charities.

“I’m passionate about children and I help out wherever I can with YAWA (Yayasan Anak Warisan Alam) and MKKM (Majlis Kewajipan Kanak-Kanak Malaysia).

“I believe if you’re in a position to give, you should never hesitate to do just that,” says Sazzy, who was recently selected as the poster girl for Earth Hour Malaysia, a worldwide environmental awareness programme held in March this year.

With so many things to juggle, the busy starlet admits that it is sometimes tough to balance work and play. In fact, she was even working on her honeymoon!
“At one point, my schedule was so hectic that I even considered moving to the country to escape from it all! My friends and family were so shocked, and that’s when I realised I needed to take a break,” she recalls.

Spick & Span Sazzy

Using her stockpile of photos, Sazzy and hubby Nazril accentuate their staircase area with a dash of colour.

Her ideal day off doesn’t involve glamorous dinner parties or dressing to the nines. She prefers staying home… and cleaning!

“I take after my mum,” she reveals. “On my day off I enjoy cleaning up my house, decluttering and being a total housewife!”

Sazzy feels that when she declutters her home, she declutters her mind and soul. She also firmly believes that when one’s home is organised, one’s life will be too.

Her favourite hang out spot at home is none other than her kitchen. “It is the ideal place for two of my favourite pastimes: chit-chatting with my friends and grabbing a bite!”

When she needs a quiet moment, she heads to the patio in the evening with her favourite drink in hand, and curls up on her favourite wooden bench.

Personalised Home Décor

Sazzy favours the Bohemian concept when it comes to decorating her home as it shows passion, personality and reflects personal history.

“I feel it’s more authentic to personalise the décor in your home with things that reflect your background and your life’s story,” she says.

She does this by decorating her living space with things of sentimental value such as glassware from her wedding, an antique record player she found on a memorable trip and a collection of Shakespeare’s works – a reflection of her passion for literature.

She also personalises the furnishings – mixing and matching patterns, textures and palettes.

Sazzy’s home décor does not get any more personal than the framed cover shots of herself that adorn the stairway. According to her, it was a joint project with hubby Nazril Idrus, who even dubs it their “Staircase to Stardom”.

“I’ve never framed any of my cover shots but since I have a stockpile of them and my staircase could use some decorating, why not?” she says with a laugh.

The couple’s next big project is the landscaping of their garden. They are reluctant to hand the job over to a landscape designer, preferring to take their time decorating their home themselves. Staying true to the Bohemian concept, the love birds want their cosy nest to reflect their background and history.
