Mynn Lee keeps it sweet and simple

Sweet and simple: Auditor-turned-radio DJ Mynn Lee

There’s something fabulous about living in a condominium unit located at an up-and-coming neighbourhood such as Damansara Perdana. Unlike the city centre where congested traffic is the daily view from the window, high-rise dwellers here enjoy a solitary surrounding.

Just ask auditor-turned-radio DJ Mynn Lee, who has been a resident of Damansara Perdana since 2007. Lee, whose programme in RED FM airs from 8pm to 1am daily, lives in a spacious corner-lot, duplex unit.

She confesses that she isn’t sure of the exact size of the unit. But with four bedrooms, two living areas and a wrap-around balcony, the built-up area of the unit should be at least 2,800 sq ft.

Lee may not be apt when it comes to measurement, but the Kuantan-born lass is certainly hands-on in decorating the unit. She claims that she has single-handedly conceptualised and furnished the duplex unit. Here, the 29-year-old ruminates on simple renovation, hectic lifestyle and a place to call home.

What’s your daily routine like?
I normally get up at 9am. Getting ready takes about one hour, and I work at my office from 10am to 6pm. After dinner, I would go straight to Red FM office to prepare my materials before going on air at 10pm until 1am. (Her program is from 8pm - 1am or 10pm - 1am)

How did you get into the radio business?
At the end of 2010, I joined a talent contest to search for the next Red FM DJ called Rudy’s Recruit. I won the competition. Subsequently, I was appointed as one half of Red FM’s Late Night Love Songs with Linora Low.

You’re also a performer, who runs a production house business. Share with us at what point in your life that you knew you wanted to have a career in the show business?
Well, I have always loved performing arts. My first stage performance was a solo dance routine when I was just 7 years old. Despite growing up in a small town, my childhood was full with art-related activities such as ballet and piano.

I suppose I knew that I wanted to have a career in the entertainment business all along, but it just took me a few turns before I got here.

A personal touch: Lee single-handedly furnished her duplex unit.

Did you pursue a formal education in creative discipline?
I didn’t. In fact, I read Accounting & Finance at Nilai University College. I landed a job at an international accounting firm as an auditor – a career I pursued for several years. I nurtured my creativity by surrounding myself with people with similar interest such as the theatre folks and the production crews.

Throughout 2008 and 2009, I started getting opportunities to act in television dramas, independent movies and other theatre and musical productions.

In 2009, I also ventured into business. Together with a partner, I founded a production house called Kash Pictures. A year later, Kash Pictures released a 13-episode English drama for ntv7 titled, Crossings, in which I produced and acted.

Your career looks all bright. Now tell us about your house. How would you describe your duplex unit?
This duplex unit is my sanctuary. The main living room, kitchen and balcony are on the ground floor, while four bedrooms, a study and another living room are on the first floor.

I personally decorated this unit, and my goal was to have a modern look, with a touch of earthy element such as wood. The furniture and finishing are simple, from an L-shape sofa to a black dining table.

The balcony, which was originally designed as a garden, has been paved and turned into a cosy outdoor area. This decision was made because I have no time to garden.

How much did you spend on this makeover?
I spent around RM100k for the furniture, finishing and knickknacks.

How much did your family buy this unit for? Has the value appreciated since then?
We bought this unit for about RM600k and it is currently priced at RM1mil in the market.

Are you thinking of purchasing your own place?
Yes, I am thinking about owning my own place. I would like it to be somewhere around Damansara Perdana. However, I would prefer a place that is smaller (than a duplex unit).

As far the interior is concerned, I prefer a simple and uncomplicated design.
