What makes a good interior designer?
I believe that if you want to be a good designer, you don’t just design and draw for the sake of doing it because that would make you a draftsman. A good designer should be able to sell his or her designs too. I always tell my students that communication is the key to success.
Now tell us about Eric being a lecturer.
I started lecturing at several local universities and design colleges 6 years ago. Growing up, I remember being taught to care for the environment and your family members. I always had an affinity for young people. And for this reason too, a group of talented people and I have been working on a new show called “Creative Homes”, which is aimed at introducing up and coming designers to the public.
You have been one of most vocal celebrities in the country when it comes to green issues. Tell us about your project concerning the issue.
That’s right. I have been very into the green issues lately. What I have been trying to promote is a simple concept of simplicity living with purely natural resources.
Given the century-old dependency we have on natural sources, it will take some getting used to changing our lifestyle for example reducing the use of plastic bags by using recycled shopping bags instead. My team and I are all geared up to get into various activities, road shows and events to live out this concept. Expect some fun stuff coming up soon!

Okay, let me first say this: The biggest crime many Malaysians commit is over-colouring their homes. They love having an array of colours. It isn’t uncommon to see four walls painted in four different colours here, and we’re not talking about kindergarten schools. My advice is to reduce the use of colours to three or less! Also, use warm lightings in bedroom and living room to create a comfortable atmosphere. As for the kitchen, bathroom and study room, make sure you have windows that would allow sunlight to come in to create a fresh and soothing effect.
You can catch “Deko Bersama Eric” on Astro Ria [Channel 104] prime time every Monday night 9pm.
