Bangsar's beautiful PLOT

Creating space that is not only functional but stylish is what PDI Design & Associates (PDI) does, and the PLOT is an outstanding testament to this. Located on Jalan Maarof in Bangsar, the PLOT is an old, two-story bungalow that has been transformed into an award-winning structure. Its discreet and understated façade is a modern mix of steel, glass and concrete. While it may look simple on the outside, what lies within is chic and original.

Modern simplicity
Clean linear lines define the PLOT, which is painted in neutral, cool and monochrome shades. The design’s simplicity ensures that it is neither over furnished nor cluttered, and its wide spaces cause one to immediately relax after stepping into the building.

Tan Su Cheng, managing partner of PDI emphasises that at the PLOT, simplicity is not the same as the minimalist concept. This is evident as the interior is enhanced with modern designer furniture such as the eye-catching Him & Her chairs, which are inspired by the human form, by Fabio Novembre.

Many of the rooms at the PLOT have floor to ceiling windows. The intention is to integrate the surrounding views as part of its interior design. Also, the large windows allow an abundance of natural light to stream in, which brightens up the ambience.

Capturing nature indoors
The PLOT is located on one of Bangsar’s busiest streets, thus PDI sought to contrast the hustle and bustle outside with an interior that is relaxing and in harmony with nature.

Plants and landscaped greenery are visible in almost every part of the PLOT. In addition, strategically-placed mirrors further reflect the landscape outside into its interior. There is also a distinct lack of decorative items and furnishings. This is apparently a conscious effort by PDI to ensure that the panoramic views of the PLOT’s well-designed landscape are not overshadowed by decorative items. In addition, two “green” meeting rooms complement the landscape outside. These rooms have ceiling to floor windows that not only allow in streams of sunshine, but also provide beautiful views. Some of the PLOT’s environmentally-friendly features include its clever design that ensures only necessary spaces and rooms are air-conditioned. This effectively saves 40% of space from energy use.

Furthermore, the layout allows excellent airflow. A rooftop that can be opened helps disperse heat, keeping the building cool and comfortable. There are also special gutters that collect rainwater to be used for washing.

Affordable quality designs

If you think quality design cost a bomb, PDI is ready to prove you wrong. Su Cheng says, “It’s not about expensive things, but rather using a mix and match of the right materials, a good colour scheme and a combination of textures, which can transform an entire space.”

A simple but colourful mosaic tile design can create amazing results while the common parquet floor can look completely different when laid vertically (which also ensures durability). These are just some of the cost-effective and creative methods PDI has employed to create the effect they want.

Apart from that, lighting plays a big role in the PLOT design. Natural light gives off a sense of warmth that recharges one’s energy – perfect for a structure that functions as an office. When the sun sets, the PLOT gives off a totally different vibe. The tasteful lighting casts a mellow sophistication that just beckons one to come and chill out.

With its brilliantly cohesive concept, it is little wonder to note that a good PLOT is indeed made up of innovative design.
