The Revolutionary CH24 Wishbone Chair
It is a blast from the past. Long before Al Gore’s forceful campaign on global warming and green lifestyle, there were Hans J. Wegner and Holgen Hansen, son of Carl Hansen. Both worked together in what would become an iconic design that survived temporary trends and cultural influences within five decades: the Wishbone Chair. Known as the hallmark of Danish modern design, the strength of the Wishbone Chair lies behind the wonderful green concept and technology that Wegner and Hansen had come up with.
Eco-friendly Chair
The legendary CH24 Wishbone Chair is considered one of the greatest design icons even today and is instantly recognisable as the pioneer of modern sensibility. Apart from the simple and innovative design, it is the material selection and the thought process behind the straightforward ensemble that makes this chair special.
For example, the ‘Y-shape’ frame of this chair is made from Danish hardwood, while the seat is woven from paper cord. Entirely biodegradable, the CH24 Wishbone Chair is not intended to be sustainable furniture product, but designed to last for generations.
An avid advocate for responsible use of woods, Carl Hansen always ensures that the raw materials are procured in a way that is the least harmful to the environment. Since almost all of their supply of hardwoods comes from Danish forests, which are managed according to the Danish Forest Act, Hansen makes sure that for every tree cut, five more are planted. This law promotes sustainable forestry incorporating ecological, social and economic considerations.
Design Sensibility
There is nothing “throw-away” about the Wishbone Chair. The lasting beauty of the design; a celebration of harmony between natural materials and timeless design, has been tested by the varying tastes of several generations. Its workmanship has stood the trials of everyday use since 1950.
A relatively light and small piece of furniture, the CH24 Wishbone Chair has unique curved hind legs, steam-bent top and Y-shaped back that provides freedom of movement and comfort. Such attention to details, according to Wegner, is crucial.
“The chair is the closest thing to people, so it is important that its detailing is in order. I feel details as much as I see them. People touch their furniture; they see with their hands,” says Wegner.
The Wishbone chair is truly a design masterpiece that combines unsurpassed aesthetical qualities with the highest level of sustainability.
