Marcelo - The Versatile Artist
“In some paintings you can almost sense the mood of the artist in the manner it’s created,” says Marcelo Lebeau. Marcelo, owner of the art gallery ‘Marcelo’, serves a unique mobile art gallery not found in Kuala Lumpur without a price. His consulting services are however, free of charge. Born in Argentina, India was Marcelo’s first venture into Asia where he lived for 10 years. Now living in Malaysia for over 14 years, he is happily married to his wife, Cordelia. Today his versatile gallery caters to a wide range of preferences.
Having opened a gallery recently in Kota Damansara, Marcelo’s gallery also features a mobile version, dubbed his ‘mobile gallery’. Serving as an art consultant, he brings art pieces to people’s homes or offices where they are able to view it on the wall or area they want placed. Providing this service completely free of charge, he comments, “Having been in the art industry for more than 25 years, I give recommendations to people based on what they want and whether it fits the mood of the environment.” To sum it up simply, he expresses that in order for an art piece to fit the space it is in, one would need to ‘feel’ that it suits the ambience.
His clientele includes many dignitaries and other prominent figures, namely the Sultan of Pahang, Former Ambassador of Ecuador Manuel Pesantes and Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir. He even shares occasional dinner dates with the Ambassador of Venezuela Manuel Guzmanh.
A Piece For Everyone
Thematic paintings such as the koi-inspired painting in Marcelo’s gallery offer a new perspective to even the most amateur art critic. The vibrant mesh of hues blending together will make a bold statement in any room. Just as mesmerising and relaxing to watch the koi fish swim, the koi-inspired painting in Marcelo’s gallery also captures the fluid essence of the fish to enamour the viewer. The shimmery, glistening features of the koi allow the smooth ebb and flow of one’s thoughts and imagination to roam freely.

Paintings with religious inspiration such as the one of Makkah in Marcelo’s gallery are also tasteful. The harmony of colours used in the painting symbolise the unity portrayed by the holy place. “Different kinds of art stimulate different parts of your body, some paintings are seen with feelings from the heart,” says Marcelo. Such is the case for the painting of Makkah. The commanding piece draws viewers to contemplate and reflect upon their religious beginnings - their roots.
Abstract art pieces such as the ones in Marcelo's gallery use shadows and tones well, inspiring thoughtful interpretations. Geometric forms are incorporated with purposeful strokes such as the grunge-like piece in his gallery. To appreciate such pieces, Marcelo advises to keep an open mind when looking at them, and that, “Some paintings such as modern art or abstract paintings can stir your visual intelligence and feed your mind.”
A unique number of pieces incorporating mixed-media are also featured in the gallery. “I love all kinds of art, it is rare to find an art piece that I cannot appreciate,” says Marcelo. The lotus flower piece featured on his wall combines the use of metallic pieces bonded together with artistically placed lotus flowers made from steel. Glowing with an old world Asian charm, the mixed-media wall balances modern metalwork with historical symbolism of harmony.
