"Floating garden" - an innovative aquarium
No one likes living in a dirty, stuffy house. The same goes for the little "friends" in your aquarium. Most fishes are not able to adapt to changes in the water's chemistry, which is often caused by increasing levels of bacteria, chemicals and waste. Proper filtration can preserve the overall health of the fishes and maintain the aquarium's beauty.
Now, there's an alternative to the conventional types of filtration in the market. It is known as "floating garden", and is designed by Genjamin Graindorge. His innovative solution features a 100% natural filtration system which comprises of a sand cushion and plants. Graindorge has adopted two techniques to eliminate nitrate wastes produced by fishes.
1) Gravel bed filtration
Water from the tank flows into a tray and passes through a five-centimeter layer of river sand. The sand cushion filters suspended waste particles and forms medium to transform azotes into nitrates.
2) Aquaponic
The nitrate-enriched water now flows through the plant. The plant will take the nitrate as food, leaving the remaining water clean from nitrate.
This way, the aquarium's water remains stable, clean and the tank needs only minimal maintenance. All you need is a sponge to wipe the aquarium's glass (on the inside) to remove algae deposits, an occasional top-up to compensate surface evaporation, and of course, food for the fish.
The interesting and minimalist design ensures that the "floating garden" blends into almost any home decor. This ground-breaking product will be available to the public beginning July 2010.
