The Year of the Tiger is upon us and what better way to usher in the Lunar New Year by adorning the home with some traditional Chinese decorations. Now, don’t cringe when we say “traditional” because these timeless and classic décor – when utilised properly – will certainly add style to your home.
Below are some ideas to get your house ready for the upcoming festivities!
Chinese paintings
Chinese paintings bring you back to a time of tranquility in the past. The artwork is bold and strong. While the colours pop out, the art itself usually has clean and simple lines.
Tip:
Get a Chinese peasant painting and hang it on the largest wall in the living room. It will instantly give the room an Oriental feel. You can also opt for an image with many people doing various activities for a more festive feel.
Chinese calligraphy
This is another great art form because it is lovely to look at and has meaning. Chinese calligraphy is a unique art expression that is rich in content and is very appealing.
Tip:
Choose any prosperity words to display. The more popular ones for the home include Love, Joy and Peace.
Chinese opera mask
The Chinese opera is China's most popular form of drama and musical theatre. Its performers are usually clothed in vibrant-coloured costumes. Not everyone appreciates the opera mask but the designs are beautiful and its colours, attractive. Each mask is different as it represents different characters in the drama.
Tips:
Choose a series of different characters and hang them in a row. A gold or red backdrop will add a nice finishing touch to the wall display of masks.
Dining table setting
For a festive dining set, go for bright red with lovely flower designs. Gold is also a prosperous colour and makes nice detailing on porcelain dining sets. Ancient Chinese motifs on the dining set would look good too.
