The local weather is often subjected to heavy rain and a humid climate. Thus, it is important to select the right paint and sealer to protect your exterior walls so the colours on your walls remain vibrant.

Powdery surfaces
– Paint adulterated with foreign (calcium carbonate) pigments.
– Breakdown of paint binder due to constant exposure to harsh weather which, in turn, exposes the pigments.
– Premature breakdown of paint from use of cheap paint / inferior grade paint.
Solution
– Wash down or water jet the walls to remove all traces of powder. Allow walls to dry thoroughly.
– Apply one coat of Nippon Acrylic 5170 Wall Sealer, followed by two coats of Nippon Paint premium products.

One of the causes of powdery surfaces is the breakdown of paint binder due to continuous exposure to harsh weather.

Flaking
– Caused by poor substrate conditions such as dampness in the walls and high alkaline conditions.
– Improper surface cleaning before painting.
– extreme weather conditions which causes the paint to wear off.
– Use of unsuitable paint grade such as interior paint used for exterior walls.
Solution
– Scrape or water jet to remove all flaking paint film. Allow walls to dry thoroughly.
– Apply one coat of Nippon Acrylic 5170 Wall Sealer, followed by two coats of Nippon Paint premium products.
Efflorescence
– Painting was done on the walls before the cement plaster was completely dry. This causes migration of water-soluble salts from cement drying out on the surface.
Solution
– Clean off the walls with water and hand brush thoroughly. Use water jet for best results.
– ensure the walls are free from water seepage and are thoroughly dry before painting.
– Apply one coat of Nippon Vinilex 5100 Wall Sealer, followed by two coats of Nippon Weatherbond.

Algae/Fungus
– Content dampness of surface allowing fungus and algae to grow on the accumulated dirt.
– Insufficient algaecide / fungicide in paint.
Solution
– Clean off with water and hand brush thoroughly or, for best results, water jet the walls to remove accumulated dirt, algae and fungus.
– Treat the surface with fungicide. Allow walls to dry thoroughly.
– Apply one coat of Nippon Acrylic 5170 Wall Sealer, followed by two coats of Nippon Weatherbond.
– Regular washing of the walls to remove the accumulated dirt can prevent occurrence of such problems.
